When you’re meeting someone new, they can’t exactly sniff you out like a dog. So it’s up to you to make them feel at ease, and here’s how:
- Smile - A genuine smile is a great way to break the ice. It shows you’re friendly and approachable.
- Make Eye Contact - When speaking to another person, make eye contact with him. If you look down or elsewhere, the person may think you’re shy or inattentive.
- Focus On The Person - Don’t glance around the room as you’re talking to someone - it’s rude. Focus on the person you’re speaking to; don’t look like you’re trying to find a better conversation elsewhere.
- Be Yourself - People can sniff out a phony from a mile away, so just relax and be yourself. If your personality keeps changing, people won’t know who the real you is and how to act around you.
- Presentation Is Everything - If you’re dirty, unkempt or smell bad, the other person will likely feel uncomfortable around you. Maintain good hygiene at all times.
- Respect Personal Space - Don’t touch or hug a person if you don’t know if their the huggable or touchy-feely type. Maintain a good space between you and the other person, so they don’t feel crowded or violated.
- Tell A Joke - Jokes are a great way to break the ice - just keep them clean.
- Ask Not-Too-Personal Questions - Unless you really know the person, refrain from asking too-personal questions. If you don’t know what to talk about, start with the day’s headlines or the weather. Avoid talking about religion, politics and other inflammatory topics.
- Avoid Being A Downer - Negativity makes others feel uncomfortable, so try not to drag others down.
- Don’t Overstay Your Welcome - When you’re done with a conversation, move on - there is such a thing as a conversation with absolutely no substance.
