If you want a creative garden, think beyond traditional flower pots and try one of these funky alternatives:
- Cracks In Cement Are Good Places For Herbs - If you have a crack in the side of your house or a sidewalk, fill it with an aromatic herb like sage. When people step on the herbs on the sidewalk, it leaves a light scent.
- Plant Flowers In Brick Holes - If you have old bricks with holes hanging around, lay them on their sides and plant flowers in the holes.
- Put Old Cooking Pots, Bowls And Crockery To Use - If you have old pots, bowls and crockery that you don’t use anymore, plant flowers in them.
- Use Mismatched Dishes To Catch Water - If you have mismatched plates in your kitchen, use them under your unique or traditional flower pots to catch excess water.
- Plant A Mini-Garden In An Old Wheelbarrow - If you have an old wheelbarrow, it’s the perfect size for a mini-garden, especially herbs and vegetables. Tip Diva has thriving tomato plants in her old wheelbarrow.
- Use Old Metal Rakes And Stakes For Climbing Plants - If you have old metal rakes, shovels, stakes or posts hanging around, drive them into the ground and let vines and other climbing plants do their thing.
- Try An Old Watering Can - An old watering can - especially a metal one - is especially cute with flowers. It also makes a great gift if you tie a bow around the handle or spout.
- Don’t Throw Out The Old Toilet, Sink Or Bathtub - Like the wheelbarrow, they make great mini-gardens.
- Chinese Food Containers And Egg Cartons Make Great Starters - If you need to grow seedlings or starter plants, look towards recycling old Chinese food containers and egg cartons.
- Put Old Shoes To Good Use - If you have old shoes, they make unique little planters, as well.

Another popular alternative in these parts is using a half barrel as a large planter as well. You can find them not only at nurseries but even at the grocery stores in the area.

I like the use of hanging planters. They are great for a balcony or patio, and you can use them to grow not only flowers but a lot of folks use them to grow vegetables, such as upside down tomatoes.
