It’s becoming more difficult to separate work life from personal life - but it is possible to have both mutually exclusive, if you work hard to keep that separation:
- Limit Your Personal Calls While At Work - Once in a while is fine, but if you need to make a personal call - whether scheduling a doctor’s appointment or checking in with your spouse - do it on your break.
- Limit Checking Your Personal E-Mail While At Work - Also limit checking your personal e-mail to your lunch break. Remember that some companies do not allow personal Internet use, so check with your company’s Web usage policy first.
- Manage Your Time More Effectively - Make to-do lists and keep a day-planner to make sure you’re giving yourself adequate work and personal time. For more, see Top Ten Tips - Getting Things Done.
- Make Sure You Make Time For Yourself - And make sure you write yourself into your calendar - don’t neglect your personal time, or you will become resentful of your work. For more, see Top Ten Tips - Making More Time For Yourself.
- Stay Organized - The more organized you are, the quicker you get tasks done and the more time you have for yourself. For more, see Tip Diva’s posts on staying organized.
- Delegate Tasks - If there are tasks that can be delegated to someone else - say a co-worker or your spouse - delegate them to free up time for yourself.
- Shut Off Your Blackberry - When you’re at home, shut off your Blackberry. Hide it in a locked drawer or give it a spouse or child, if needed.
- Resist The Urge To Check Work E-Mail And Voice Mail Outside Of Office Hours - Don’t let work seep into your personal life if you don’t have to. Your e-mails and voice mails aren’t going anywhere. You can always check them later.
- Leave Your Workload At The Office - Leave papers, projects and other work-related items in the office. Don’t bring them home, unless it’s for safekeeping.
- Make Yourself Unreachable - Make sure you let co-workers or clients know when you don’t want to be reached. A simple “I will be out of the office and won’t have access to voice mail or e-mail” should suffice.
