Sunburns happen to the best of us, but there are ways to treat your red, swollen, painful skin:
- Rub In Some Fresh Aloe - Get an aloe plant, or buy aloe gel from the health food store. Aloe lotion is not as effective, but can be used in addition to the pure aloe. Cooling it in the refrigerator will bring additional relief.
- Pop A Pain Reliever - Taking a pain reliever like Tylenol or aspirin will help relieve pain and inflammation.
- Take A Cool Shower - Cold water does not zap moisture from your skin like hot water does, and the coolness will help the burn feel better.
- Wear Loose Clothing - Wear loose clothing that doesn’t chafe and allows your skin to breathe. Avoid bras, elastic, spandex or other material that may constrain the skin.
- Combat Peeling With Olive Oil - If your skin starts to peel after you’ve sunburned, rub cool olive oil onto your skin. It will keep the skin moisturized, which is important to healing.
- Apply Tea Bags To Reduce Swelling - Rubbing cold, wet tea bags over your burned skin. The tannic acids in the tea help relieve pain.
- Apply Cold Compresses - Apply cold compresses - not icy - to your skin for pain relief.
- Take An Oatmeal And Milk Bath To Reduce Itching - If your burn starts to itch, take an oatmeal bath (Tip Diva loves Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment) with a few cups of milk.
- Avoid Perfume And Other Irritants - Perfume and other irritants will only make the burn worse. Also avoid rubbing your skin with towels, loofahs or other scratchy items.
