Walking is great exercise. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, walking can: give you more energy and make you feel good; reduce stress and help you relax; tone and strengthen your muscles; improve your stamina and fitness; and more. But you don’t have to plan a strenuous walking regimen or buy a treadmill. There are easy ways to get more steps in your day:
- Park Further Away From Your Destination - When driving to a store or office, park further away from the door and walk. Just make sure to do it in a safe area, and never at night.
- Get Off A Train Or Bus Stop Early - If you take a train, subway, trolley or bus, hop off a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way to your destination.
- Forgo The Elevator Or Escalator For Stairs - Climb as many flights as you can handle. Or, if you can’t walk all the way up, take the elevator or escalator up only part of the way and hoof the rest.
- Walk Over To Desks Of Co-Workers - Instead of e-mailing or calling co-workers, walk over to their desks to talk - even if they’re on another floor.
- Pace While You’re On The Phone - While you’re on the phone, pace back and forth or walk around in a circle.
- Walk Instead Of Driving To Nearby Destinations - If you have to run errands or go somewhere close to where you live or work, walk instead of drive.
- Walk Around During Commercial Breaks - Instead of loafing on the couch, get up and walk around the room or climb a set of stairs a few times.
- Walk During Your Lunch Hour Or Work Breaks - If you have a lunch hour or breaks at work, take part of the time to walk around the office or the neighborhood. The fresh air will also rejuvenate you, helping you get through the rest of the work day.
- Get A Walking Partner - Whether a person or a dog, having someone else to walk with will keep you motivated.
- Buy A Pedometer - A pedometer, which could be found at sporting goods stores and plenty of places online, show you how many steps you take in a day. Use it to set a goal for yourself.
