If you’re in the mood to have a party, why not try something almost everyone enjoys - ice cream! Here are tips on having a successful ice-cream sundae party:
- Buy Basic Ice Cream - There’s no need to get fancy with the ice cream - that’s what mixing the toppings is for! Buy three or four basic flavors for your party; chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, butter pecan and mint chocolate chip are always good bets.
- Buy The Right Amount - An ice cream serving is approximately 1/2 a cup, but expect your guests to eat more than that and leave room for bigger appetite error (one of Tip Diva’s brothers can easily put away half a carton!). When you buy the ice cream, figure about a cup-and-a-half to two cups per person.
- Leave Room For Ice Cream - If you’re going to have an ice cream party, don’t have a huge meal beforehand! Stay light, or leave plenty of time before dinner and dessert. Otherwise you’ll have a lot of uneaten ice cream and stomach aches.
- Leave Ice Cream Out To Soften A Bit - Before the party starts, leave the ice cream out to soften for a few minutes before scooping. But if you still find yourself with rock-hard ice cream, dip the scoop in a cup of hot water to get things rolling.
- Buy Different Toppings - Part of ice cream sundae fun is toppings, so don’t skimp! Try nuts, candies, fruits, sprinkles, cherries, whipped cream, and sauces like fudge, chocolate and caramel.
- Have A Separate Dish And Spoon For Each Topping And Different Scoops For Each Ice Cream - People can get finicky about products mixing, so have separate dishes, spoons and scoops for each item. You also don’t want ice cream drips in the toppings.
- Try Dessert Liqueurs For Adults - Sweet dessert liqueurs taste great on ice cream, so try sprinkles of drinks like Bailey’s Irish Cream, amaretto, Kahlua and other dessert liqueurs.
- Use Disposable Bowls And Spoons - Cleanup can be very sticky, and do you really want to wash all those dishes after you’re done? Go disposable if you can.
- Provide Plenty Of Napkins - There are likely to be drips, spills and sticky fingers and faces, so be prepared with plenty of napkins. You may even want to provide wet napkins.
- Have Everyone Scoop And Top In A Line - Line up the ice creams first, then the toppings, and have everyone scoop in a line. This eliminates reaching, spilling and mixing that comes with a discombobulated setup.
