Summer is just around the corner, and for many, that means beach season. But how do you pack for an enjoyable trip to sand, sun and surf?
- Bring Finger Foods - Do you really want to be eating on a plate with a fork and knife at the beach? It’s clumsy and you’re more likely to get sand on your food. Carry small finger foods, like chips, vegetables, crackers and cheese, in Ziploc bags that can be easily closed and protect your food from that extra “crunch.”
- Pack Plenty Of Beverages - The beach is hot, so stay hydrated by bringing plenty of drinks with you. Water is the best, so have a few bottles on hand, even if you choose to bring sodas, beers or other beverages.
- Bring A Blanket That Will Not Collect Sand - Terrycloth and other fluffy blankets will collect sand as people walk on and off the blanket. You’ll find yourself constantly shaking it out, so bring one that’s easy to brush off, like a bed sheet.
- Carry Toys In A Mesh Bag - If you have beach toys, like shovels and buckets, carry them in a mesh laundry bag, which can be found at Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond. The mesh allows them to dry quickly, and you can shake the sand out of them before putting them back in your car.
- Wear Sandals Or Water Shoes - Sand can burn your feet, as well as asphalt or concrete in the beach’s parking lot. Water shoes are especially handy for rocky beaches, and will protect your feet from being cut or bruised by rocks, shells and beach glass.
- Don’t Forget Sun Protection - Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and umbrellas to shield yourself from the dangerous rays of the sun. For more, see Top Ten Tips - Staying Safe In The Sun.
- Have Extra Towels And Clothes Handy - If you’re swimming, expect plenty of wet towels, so have extras on hand in case you need to dry yourself after multiple trips to the water. And beaches may get chilly or breezy by sunset, so make sure to bring clothes to cover up and go home with.
- Use A Backpack - Carry around clothes, books, sun protection, towels and other beach items in a backpack, so your hands are free to hold on to your children, beach chairs or coolers. Also carry plastic grocery bags to store wet towels and prevent your other items from getting wet.
- Leave Valuables At Home Or In The Car - Don’t carry your wallet, expensive jewelry or other valuables to the beach. Leave them at home, or if you must, store them in your glove compartment and lock up. If you need to carry cash on the beach for hot dog or ice cream purchases, buy a small waterproof key and wallet holder to wear around your neck or wrist. And remember that electronic equipment will get sand in it, so cover your electronics with plastic, or go cheap, such as carrying a disposable point-and-shoot camera.
- Carry A Container Of Baby Powder - If you have sticky, scratchy sand on your legs, feet, back and every other nook and cranny of your body, sprinkle yourself with baby powder. The sand will slide right off!
