Mother’s Day is for celebrating that special woman in your life - and not just your mother, but perhaps a grandmother, aunt, older sister or close friend who’s been like a mother to you. Don’t know what to get that person? Here are some creative and unique ideas:
- Make A Photobook Or Scrapbook - Gather memories, photos, letters, stories, quotes and other things that remind you of your mother, and make a scrapbook or photobook. If you’re not artistically inclined, websites like Snapfish allow you to make affordable photobooks with easy-to-use templates, which it turns into a hardcover book and ships to you. Tip Diva’s mom is an avid gardener, so Tip Diva took pictures of flowers in her garden, mixed it with quotes about flowers and made a photobook about her mother’s garden.
- Create A Mixed CD With Songs That Remind You Of Her - Think of songs that remind you of her - they may be her favorites, songs she used to sing to you or music from times you spent together. Download the songs from a legal MP3 site like iTunes, then burn a CD. Don’t forget to decorate the cover!
- Think Of Her Interests - Is she a gardener? Sewer? Likes building things? Reads often? Think of her favorite things to do, and get her something that is part of that hobby.
- Treat Her Where She Neglects Herself - Think of where your mother has neglected herself or things around her, and find a way to make life easier for her. For instance, if your mother has been stressed out, make an appointment for her to have a nice relaxing day at the spa. If she doesn’t have time to clean the house, hire a maid to give it a good up-and-down cleaning. If she has trouble mowing the lawn, get a landscaper to come by weekly.
- Cook A Meal - Mother’s Day is one of the busiest (and rushed) days for restaurant. Instead of competing for reservations or sitting in a noisy restaurant, why don’t you cook a meal for her yourself? There are great recipes at Chow. And if you have siblings, enlist their help - perhaps one could make a salad, and another, dessert. Use nice dinnerware, and candles and flowers complete the look.
- Create A Coupon Booklet - If you’re creative, create a coupon book by hand or on your computer with “coupons” your mom can spend on you. For instance, one coupon might be for dinner and a movie. Others might be buying her a full tank of gas, running her errands or helping around the house.
- Avoid Generic Cards - Buy a Mother’s Day card ahead of time, not a day or two before when everything has been cherry-picked. And buy something that really speaks of your relationship - one could always tell a harried, generic card. If you can’t find a card that says what you want to say, get a blank card and write a poem or letter, or create your own.
- Know What She Has Enough Of - If you’ve gotten her a mug for the past 20 years, realize she probably has enough mugs and doesn’t need another, unless she truly collects them.
- Beware Of Gift Certificates - Gift certificates are popular for the person who doesn’t know what to get or for a picky recipient. However, many cards do expire or have fees, and with many retailers going bankrupt nowadays, the gift certificate may become useless quickly.
- Remember That Every Day Is Mother’s Day - Don’t just shower your mother with love one day of a year. Think of all she’s done for you! Remember to call her, drop in to say hi or let her know you’re think of her. As Mr. T says: “Treat Your Mother Right.”
