hairSalon hair dyeing is certainly expensive, so there are many people who opt to save money by coloring their tresses at home. But before you start preparing that platinum blonde or copper red, there are some things you should know:

  • Gather Your Materials Ahead Of Time - Make sure you have your gloves, towels, dyes and whatever other material you need prepared before going ahead.
  • Do A Patch Test Beforehand - Follow directions on the dye box on doing a patch test, so you can see the results on your hair and head off any bad reaction at the pass.
  • Protect Your Clothes - Wear old clothes, or protect your clothes with a towel so you do not get dye on them.
  • Protect Your Skin - Put Vaseline along your hairline and ears so you don’t get dye on your skin. If you do, quickly swab it with a cotton ball and some cold cream.
  • Stay In A Well-Ventilated Room - Some dyes are heavily perfumed or have strong chemicals, so open a window and get some fresh air to prevent yourself from getting dizzy.
  • Follow Directions Exactly - Don’t use shortcuts or leave the dye on for longer than instructed. It may lead to results you do not want or damage your hair.
  • Clean Up Splatters Immediately - If you splatter dye on the wall, tub or floor, quickly clean it up before it stains. If it does stain, use alcohol or bleach to get it out.
  • Rinse Hair Thoroughly - Make sure to get all dye out of your hair when you rinse it out. The water should run clear. If you don’t, you’ll get dye on your clothes and pillows.
  • Call Company If You Make A Mistake - If your hair turns out much different than you thought it would be, call the company hotline on the dye box. They’ll tell you the steps to take the correct the color. Don’t try correcting it yourself without this advice, or you risk damaging your hair.
  • Know Your Aftercare - You may have to buy certain shampoos, conditioners and brighteners to keep your hair looking its best.
