sunscreenSun is good for us - small amounts of exposure increase your body’s Vitamin D-making ability. But too much sun can be harmful, leading to sunburns or worse - cancer. Here’s how you can stay safe and have fun in the sun:

  • Buy The Correct SPF - Calculate the time it takes you to burn, and the Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, multiplies your protection factor. For instance, if you take 20 minutes to burn and you purchase SPF 25, it will protect you for 25 times longer. Make sure to buy a sunblock that covers both UVA and UVB rays, both of which can lead to skin cancer. If you’re going to the beach or will be sweating, try waterproof. Don’t forget every nook and cranny!
  • Apply In The Winter And Cloudy Days - Just because it’s not hot or the sun is not shining on you, don’t skip sun protection. The rays still come through the clouds and bounce off of light surfaces, exposing you.
  • Don’t Forget Your Lips And Scalp - Many people forget the two parts of the body, but your lips and scalp burn too! Many chapsticks come with SPF. Wear a hat if you don’t want to apply greasy sunscreen to your scalp.
  • Reapply Sunblock Often - Every two or three hours should work, but reapply after going in the water or excessive sweating.
  • Don’t Skip Protection If You Don’t Burn - Just because you tan doesn’t mean you should skip sun protection. Everyone is susceptible to the sun’s harmful rays, even if you’re not prone to burning.
  • Wear Sunglasses - Sun exposure can hurt your eyes as well, so make sure your glasses have 100 percent UV protection. Dark glasses don’t necessary mean protection, so check for a sticker or tag when you buy them.
  • Cover Up - If you can, wear a light, long sleeved shirt and pants - linen is great for the summer time. Hats and umbrellas also work well in protecting you. Also seek shade and stay out in the full sun if you can.
  • Avoid Peak Sun Hours - The sun is strongest between late morning and late afternoon, which are peak times for getting burned, as well. You lessen your sun exposure by swimming or being outdoors in the early morning or early evening.
  • Stay Hydrated - Heat and sun zaps you of water, so make sure you drink more if you’re outside, especially if you’re running around or doing heavy work.
  • Watch For Signs Of Heat Stroke - Hot sun, inadequate liquid intake and other factors can cause heat stroke, in which your body can’t handle heat stresses. Visit Mayo Clinic’s site to find out more about signs, symptoms, and what to do if someone you know is suffering from possible heatstroke.
