Top Ten Tips - Having Fun Locally

houseAre you bummed that travel is so expensive nowadays? Well, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on your days off or vacation. So much can be found in your own backyard, if you know where to look:

  • Check Your Local Newspaper - Many newspapers have a published page of events, from local musician performances to art shows. Check out what’s going on around town - you’ll be amazed at what you’re missing.
  • Check Your Library - Libraries have performances, classes, book clubs and other events that are low-cost, and many times, free.
  • Check Your Local College - Colleges have performances, classes, lectures and academic-related events that may pique your interest.
  • Visit Parks, Nature Centers, Museums And Other Local Points Of Interest - Many towns have historical societies, historical houses, walking tours and other points of interest. Check your town’s website to find out more, or call someone in its parks or cultural affairs department.
  • Walk Around - You’ll be surprised at things you miss zooming by in a car. Stop and pay attention to things you normally don’t, like houses, gardens, parks and more.
  • Bike Or Drive To Somewhere You Haven’t Been - If you want to go further, take a bike or car. One of Tip Diva’s favorite activities is turning down a street she’s never turned down before and seeing where it takes here - provided she’s in a safe neighborhood.
  • Ask Neighbors For Suggestions - Your neighbors may know about events or places that you don’t know about, so ask them about what might be of interest to you.
  • Support Your Local Schools And Houses Of Worship - Both schools and houses of worship put on fundraising events, such as plays, performances, fairs, flea markets and more, so be sure to check out what they’re up to.
  • Support Your Local Merchants - Instead of driving out of town to a mall or grocery store, see what your local merchants have to offer. Buy cards at a gift store, meat at a butcher and cakes from the bakery.
  • Share Your Adventures - If you discover interesting places or people, don’t forget to tell your friends, or share your views on a review site like Yelp.
