In our medicine and vitamin-happy society, many of us have enough pills and liquids to make us scratch our heads and wonder what they’re for. Here’s how to take out the confusion:
- Keep Medications And Vitamins In A Cool, Dry, Safe Place - Medication and vitamins are susceptible to temperature and moisture, so the bathroom medicine cabinet doesn’t cut it. Try a drawer or shelf away from moisture and heat sources, but in a safe place where children or animals cannot access them.
- Write Down Your Regimen - Make a list of the medications and vitamins you take, the dosages, what times and why you’re taking them. From this information…
- Create A Chart - A calendar or wipe off chart is helpful in helping you remember to take your medication and vitamins. You can check off each time you take them, or work out another method that suits you. But if you’re a chronic forgetter…
- Use A Timer - Whether a kitchen time, watch timer, alarm clock or a specially made pill time, set alarms so you’ll know what time to take your medication or vitamins.
- Get A Pill Organizer - Pill organizers help you separate pills by the time of day or day of the week. But be very careful about dropping them, you can have a mess (and a big pill mix-up) on your hand.
- Rethink Your Prescriptions - Sometimes, you can condense prescriptions or get them in another form, making taking them easier. For instance, if you tend to forget taking birth control pills, you might consider using a weekly patch or monthly internal ring instead. Or, if you’re taking three 3 mcg. pills, you might be able to take only one 5 mcg. pill. Ask your doctor.
- Throw Out Unused Medication - You’ll cut the clutter, nix mix-ups and keep your prescriptions out of the hands of those who shouldn’t be using them.
- Check Expiration Dates - Toss away old pills and vitamins. Although usually not dangerous, they are likely ineffective. Next time, ask for a smaller prescription or buy a smaller bottle.
- Keep Family Medications Separated - If there are more than one person in your household (pets included) keep everyone’s medications and vitamins in separate bins or locations to avoid mix-ups.
- Rip Off Or Black-Out Labels Before Tossing - You don’t want anyone on the outside to know what medication you’re taking. It’s an invasion of privacy, so black out those labels, or rip them off before tossing.
