Part of owning a dog is making sure he gets enough exercise - and walking together is one of the best ways to do it. But there are things you should know before taking Fido for a stroll:
- Make Sure Your Dog Isn’t Too Strong - If your dog is stronger than you are, you may have to get someone else to walk him or ask a pet care expert on what to do. If your dog chases things or runs ahead, he can easily drag you to the ground.
- Get An Appropriate Length Leash - You don’t want your dog to wander where he isn’t supposed to go, so buy a leash that keeps him nearby, but long enough that it doesn’t choke him. Retractable leashes are great for keeping a dog within an appropriate distance. Also, if your dog pulls at a leash, try a harness.
- Teach Your Dog Basic Commands - Make sure your dog knows how to sit and stay before taking him on a walk. Walking an undisciplined dog can be very difficult.
- Make Sure Your Dog Has Identification - Even the best dogs get loose sometimes, so make sure yours has a collar and identification in case he gets lost.
- Know Your Local Laws - Some places prohibit dogs in certain parts of town and allow them in others. Know the places where you can legally walk your dog.
- Bring Baggies To Pick Up Poop - How would you like it if you stepped in another dog’s business? You probably wouldn’t. So be courteous and bring baggies or a pooper scooper to pick up after your dog takes a dump. Additionally, some places have steep fines if you’re caught not picking up.
- Make Sure Your Dog Doesn’t Eat Random Things - The great outdoors is an exciting place for your dog, and leaves a lot to be explored. Just watch that he doesn’t eat random things, like plants, while sniffing around - you can wind up with a sick dog.
- Keep Dog Away From Other Dogs And Animals - You may have the friendliest dog on the planet, but other dogs and animals aren’t so nice. So keep Fido away from other dogs, squirrels, cats and others that may bite, scratch or scare him.
- Do Not Let People Pet Your Dog Without Asking - Many times, people (especially children) pet dogs without asking the owner - and it can lead to a growl, nip or worse. If you see someone about to pet your dog, ask them not to. Hopefully, it will remind them not to pet a stranger’s dog without asking first.
- Watch For Fatigue - If your dog is panting, slowing down or being stubborn, he may be tired or dehydrated. Remember to take breaks and give the dog water - carrying around an aluminum pie plate and bottle of water works. And don’t forget to take a swig yourself!

This is really helpful. But…and I am not being silly…any tips for walking a cat? Seriously (especially for getting some sort of harness/collar on without getting completely scratched).

Nice list. I definitely recommend a “Gentle Leader” for anyone with a strong dog that pulls. They work great for teaching dogs loose leash walking.
