Getting things done can be a big hassle. But if you take the time to ponder, prepare and prioritize, you can simplify your daily tasks. Here’s how:
- Make A Daily List - Make a list of things you need to get done and check off each item when completed. Sometimes, the thrill of checking something off is enough incentive to get things done.
- Prioritize - Make sure you get the most critical items done first; don’t put off shampooing a smelly carpet in favor of organizing your stamp collection.
- Be Practical - Do realize that you’re not going to be able to fly to Florida to visit your grandparents, shop for Thanksgiving Dinner, get your hair permed, bake a cake from scratch and read War And Peace in 24 hours. Only do what you know you can get done.
- Be Prepared - If you’re going to paint your bedroom, make sure you have all your supplies ahead of time so you don’t waste time running to the hardware store halfway through the project for more paintbrushes.
- Leave Room For Error - Sometimes you have no choice to but to go to the hardware store halfway through the project, so leave some time in daily list for unexpected items.
- Leave Room For Breaks - Do remember to leave time to eat, use the bathroom and perhaps take a quick nap or walk around the block.
- Delegate Tasks To Others - There are tasks that you really don’t have to do. For instance, you can pay a neighborhood teenager $10 to mow your front lawn, or have your children do chores for an allowance.
- Simplify With Technology - The Internet and other forms of technology may help simplify everyday tasks. For instance, instead of spending an hour waiting on line at the post office during your lunch break, ship your item from home using the U.S. Postal Service Click-N-Ship program.
- Realize You Don’t Have To Get Everything Done - If you can’t get around to organizing your stamp collection today, don’t worry. There’s always tomorrow. Don’t sweat the small stuff!
- Reward Yourself - Once you’re finished with your list, reward yourself, whether with a big chocolate chip cookie, a trip to the spa or even just a nice, relaxing afternoon on your front porch with War And Peace.
