button2Everybody has had a “wardrobe malfunction” at one time or another - even Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, who coined the phrase after the Superbowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy. But these malfunctions can easily be avoided or quickly fixed, and here’s how:

  • Wear Clothing That Fits - Ill-fitting clothing is one of the biggest offenders of wardrobe mishaps. If your pants are too tight, you run the risk of your seams splitting. If your shirt doesn’t fit across your bust, expect some buttons to go flying. If your skirt is too long, you’ll probably step on it, rip it and fall flat on your face. Make sure your clothing fits and is tailored to your size and shape. For more on dressing properly, see Tip Diva’s Top Ten Tips - Dressing Your Best.
  • Consider Your Environment - Make sure you wear clothes suited to the environment you’ll be in. For instance, you may enjoy wearing short skirts, but make sure you’re wearing underwear in case you have to exit a car (psst, stupid celebrities) or walk outside during a windy day. Better yet, wear a longer skirt or pants. And learn how to exit a car properly.
  • Take Heed To Wear And Tear - If you notice your pants are beginning to fray or your shoes need a new heel, take heed and repair them or retire them. Check your clothing for word spots, pulls, holes and other problems that can turn into eventual wardrobe malfunctions.
  • Fix Problems As Soon As You Can - If you notice a button is coming undone, sew it as soon as you can, or you might forget about it an have a wardrobe malfunction. Stop problems as soon as you can by repairing clothing in a timely fashion.
  • Have A Back-Up Plan - If you know you’re going to be in a situation where a wardrobe malfunction could be extremely embarrassing or hindering, such as a business lunch or conference, have a back up plan. Carry a sweater or jacket that you can throw over a shirt with a missing button, hole or stain. Pack extra clothes in your suitcase. Make sure you…
  • Carry Rescue Remedies - Invaluable items for your purse or suitcase include: safety pins for hems and holes, a small sewing kit for buttons and holes, a bottle of clear nail polish for pantyhose runs, a lint remover for lint and animal fur and stain remover, such as Tide To Go, for stains. • Give Yourself A Once-Over Before Leaving House - Look in a full length mirror and inspect your outfit thoroughly to make sure everything you are wearing is in place.
  • Check Yourself After Using Restroom - Restrooms are one of the biggest causes of wardrobe malfunctions. Make sure your skirt isn’t tucked into your underwear, your fly is zippered and toilet paper is not stuck to your shoe.
  • Learn From Past Experience - If you’re a klutz and have tripped over yourself in the past, stilettos may not be for you. If you always forget to zip zippers, buy clothing without zippers. If you are prone to ripped stockings, wear pants. If you constantly spill food on yourself, stick a napkin in your collar.
  • Take Things In Stride - If you do suffer a wardrobe malfunction, don’t make a big deal about it. If you just say, “Oops!” and fix the problem immediately, people will forget it ever happened. But if you cry and freak out, assure that the incident will stick in people’s minds.
