Top Ten Tips - Accessorize For Less

necklaceBeing fashionable doesn’t have to be expensive, especially when you dress up your outfit with jewelry, scarves, hats and other accessories. Here are tips on how to accessorize for less:

  • Make Your Own - If you’ve got creative juices flowing, head off to your nearest craft store and buy supplies to make your very own accessories. Some even have classes to teach you how to make jewelry, scarves and more.
  • Check Secondhand And Thrift Stores - These are great places to find accessories for cheap. Just make sure to clean or wash them when you get home.
  • Check Out Garage Sales - Tag sales are also good spots for unwanted accessories, or even ones to take apart and make your own.
  • Buy At Cheap Accessories Stores - There are plenty of places you can find cheap accessories; your local mall may have a Claire’s Accessories or Icing. Wal-Mart, Target and discount clothing stores are also great places to look. And don’t forget your nearest Chinatown, where you can find “dollar” street-side tables and accessory stores galore. First, brush up on your haggling skills.
  • Buy Online - eBay and other sites offer great deals on accessories. But if you want truly unique, creative and handmade accessories, try Etsy.
  • Check Clearance Racks - Even more expensive stores, like Macy’s and J.C. Penney, have clearance sections where you can find affordable accessories from handbags to costume jewelry. You can find even better discounts at end-of-season sales. Sometimes, clearance accessories have missing pieces or are stained; try asking for a bigger discount. If you’re crafty, you can always fix them yourself.
  • Ask Friends For Unwanted Accessories - Ask friends and family if they have accessories they don’t want anymore. You may offer to give them money, but many times, they’re happy to give them to you for free and clear up closet space.
  • Have A Swap Party - If you also have accessories you’d be willing to part with, organize an accessory swapping party. Tell your friends and family to bring their unwanted accessories, and spread them out for the taking. Remember to supply food, drinks and music!
  • Borrow - Loaners are cheaper than buying your own. But remember to be generous and offer up your collection for borrowing, too.
  • Improvise - Use what you have already and improvise. For instance, a man’s tie makes a great belt, or a brooch can make a pretty hairclip.
