Top Ten Tips - Getting Your Nails Done

polishMany women (and some men!) love getting their nails done. What else could explain a nail salon every two blocks in some places? But there are some things you should know before giving your hands and feet a treat:

  • Make Sure Your Hands And Feet Are In Good Condition - If you have any cuts or infections, don’t get your nails done. Wait until you are properly healed before getting a manicure or pedicure. It’s not sanitary for the nail salon, and you risk further irritating or infecting yourself.
  • Get Your Money Out Before Getting Nails Painted - You don’t want to be searching around your pocket, wallet or purse if your nails are wet. Make sure to get out your credit card or cash beforehand.
  • Make Sure The Nail Technician Knows What You Want - Nail treatments are as varied as the polishes themselves - some include massages, aromatherapy and painted designs. But extras come at a cost. If you just want a basic manicure or pedicure, make sure the nail technician understands that.
  • If You Chip Easily, Bring Own Nail Polish - If your nails chip easily from everyday wear and tear, bring your own nail polish so you can touch up on the chips at home. You’ll get the most out of your manicure by doing this.
  • Make Sure Nail Salon Is Licensed And Equipment Is Properly Sanitized - A proper nail establishment sanitizes everything, from the bath you soak your feet in to the file that shapes your nails. Make sure your establishment practices proper hand washing, disinfection, use of fresh or sanitized tools and has clean towels and toes separators. If you notice any wayward practices, you should report the salon to your local Department of Health.
  • Bring Your Own Tools - If you can, buy your own set of personal nail tools and bring them with you when you go to the salon. Many salons will even disinfect and store them for you. Ask your salon if they allow you to purchase your own tools.
  • Wear Flip-Flops - If you’re getting a pedicure, you’ll want to wear flip flops so you don’t smudge the polish. As accidents do happen, make sure they’re cheap flip-flops. Old Navy flip-flops are probably the best, because they’re super cheap at $3-$10 per pair. Avoid Wal-Mart flip-flops.
  • Wear Proper Pants Or Skirt - If you’re getting a pedicure, make sure your pants can be rolled up or are short enough that they don’t get soaked when your feet are in the tub. Alternatively, wear a skirt.
  • Dry Completely Before Walking Or Picking Anything Up - If you don’t want to smudge your polish, make sure it’s completely dry before you walk around, open doors or drive.
  • Tip Appropriately - Tip your manicurist or pedicurist approximately 15 to 20 percent, depending on the service. Feel free to give more if the work was exceptional. Also, some salons have masseuses who will massage your neck and shoulders while your nails are drying. Tip Diva usually gives them a dollar or two.
