Starting a new hobby can be very rewarding and fun. But what does it take to begin a collection or activity? Here are some tips on how:
- Read About The Hobby - Go to your local library and take out some books or research the hobby online. You’ll have a better idea of what the hobby’s about and what you’re getting into.
- Consider The Investment - Understand that many hobbies cost time and money. Know how much money and time you have to dedicate to a hobby before starting one up.
- Have The Resources - Besides time and money, make sure you have the space to do the hobby and access to resources. For instance, if you want to build a model train set, a small apartment in Manhattan might not be the place to do it. And if you don’t have a hobby store nearby, you may have to order parts online, which can get expensive.
- Know Your Limits - Know how much is too much. Don’t buy 50 bags of beads when you only need 10 for making a necklace. You never know when you might need to spend that money elsewhere.
- Ask Friends - If you know someone who is already involved in the hobby, ask them about how they got started, what kind of investment they’ve put into it and what suggestions they have for you. They may even help you start.
- Join A Club - There are clubs dedicated to almost every hobby. Call your local library, community center, college, store or Google for “(hobby) club.” You can also try looking on MeetUp.com.
- Take A Class - Like clubs, ask libraries, community center, stores, college or Google for classes relating to your hobby. For instance, Michael’s Stores has painting and crafting classes for all levels of talent.
- Find Online Resources - There are message boards, blogs, websites and more dedicated to your hobby. Join these sites to find like-minded people, whether you like puzzles or CPU collecting.
- Don’t Give Up - It takes time for a hobby to build up speed, especially if you need practice. Stick with it for a while before giving up… you’ll never know what you’re going to miss.
- Enjoy Regularly - That’s what makes it a hobby!

Thanks for stopping by, Cindy. You have a wonderful site - I may just have to try crocheting a plastic bag myself! It looks sort of like raffia, but probably won’t fall apart as easily (especially with the way I bang around purses)
