  • Sizes Mean Nothing - Like shoes, numbers differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. You may be a size 6 in one pair a of jeans, while a size 8 in another. Then, there’s vanity sizing. If you don’t fit into something, either go up or down - no one knows what’s on the tag, but you. If you have to go up a size, don’t use this as an excuse to feel bad about yourself. Focus more on being a healthy weight than being a certain size.
  • Clothes Can Be Tailored - You find a pair of pants that fit you perfectly, but the length is too long. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy the pants - just take them to the tailor! Tailored clothes are customized to your fit, so you’ll look good in clothes that are properly altered.
  • Choose Flattering Styles - Determine your body type and what looks best on it, and stick to those kinds of clothes and fabric. One great magazine that focuses on flattering styles each month is Glamour. It takes different body types - whether tall, thin, petite or round - and shows what works and doesn’t.
  • Accentuate The Positive - If you have an impressive asset, such as fabulous legs, wear clothes that draw attention to them instead of something negative, like a bulging midsection.
  • Ask An Honest Friend - Try something on and ask an honest friend how you look. It’s the age-old “Does my butt look big?” question. Don’t choose a friend who will say, “Yes, you look like a whale.” Choose someone who will would say, “I don’t like the fit on you… you may want to try this, instead.”
  • Shop In The Right Department Or Store - If you’re petite, you’ll have much better luck finding clothes that fit and look good on you in the petites’ section. Same goes for juniors, plus size, big and tall and more.
  • Ask Store For Suggestions - Many stores - especially upscale, have someone on hand to measure you, suggest an outfit or tell you what doesn’t work. Take advantage of this person.
  • Examine Every Angle - Look in a three-way mirror. Bend over. Sit Down. Twirl. Lift your arms. Check out an outfit from every angle possible to see if it flatters. You don’t want a shirt that will bare your entire midsection when you go to put something on a shelf, or pants that show your butt crack every time you bend down.
  • Toss What Doesn’t Fit You - If you still have that sweater from when you were 40 lbs. lighter, it’s time to donate it or give it to someone it fits. Don’t even try wearing it and giving the excuse, “Well, it used to fit!” It doesn’t anymore. Deal with it.
  • Watch “What Not To Wear” - Hosts Clinton Kelly and Stacey London find people and turn them from fashion victims to fashionistas. While you may not necessarily be a fashion victim, both Clinton and Stacey offer clothing tips almost everyone can use. Here is the full schedule.
