Top Ten Tips - Getting Out In The Blogosphere

typing.jpgCongratulations, you’ve started a new blog. Whether personal, business or even an interest-based blog, you’re now in a word filled with millions of other blogs. But how will you ever get noticed? Here are some tips to draw visitors to your blog:

  • Submit Your RSS Feeds To Feed Sites - Just Google “submit your feed” or “submit rss” to find these sites in your favorite search engine.”
  • Submit Your Blog To Blog Directories And Communities - There are many blog directories on the web that will list your blog for free, usually by topic. Tip Diva’s top picks include: Technorati, My Blog LogBloghub, Blog Catalog, Blog Mad, Blogorama and Blogtoplist. These directories and communities list you the quickest, but you can Google for other directories and communities by typing “blog directory” or “blog community” into your favorite search engine.
  • Submit Your Blog To Search Engines - First, use a meta tag analyzer to make sure your blog is search-engine ready. Then, use a service like Submit Express’ free website submission to list your blog in all the top search engines. Give it a few days for your blog to start showing up in the search engines.
  • Join A Blog Carnival - A blog carnival is a place where you can submit your blog posts to a “host,” who will then write a post on their blog or website listing your post and others relevant to a specific topic. The top blog carnival service is Blog Carnival, but you can find more tweaked to your interests by Googling “(insert interest here) blog carnival.”
  • Comment In Other People’s Blogs - Don’t just write for the blogosphere - participate in it. Visit other people’s blogs, read them and comment on them. Your website will be linked in the comment. But don’t spam just to get your name out there - be relevant and thoughtful. People know when you comment without reading, and spamming will do more harm than good to your blog’s reputation.
  • Put Your Link Out There - Put the link to your blog on your Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, personal website, e-mail signature and online community forum signatures. However, do not spam.
  • Exchange Links With Others - The more people that link to you, the better. It will give you better search engine and Technorati ratings,  and you will have a much wider audience. And if someone links to your blog, be kind and put a link to their blog or website in your blogroll or another page. For instance, you can see that Tip Diva links GarySpeer.com, EJCross.com, La Grande Anse and Just A Guy Who Reads The Papers - and all four link back to her.
  • Blog And Blog Often - Who wants to visit a rarely updated blog? Post and post often - it doesn’t necessarily have to be every day, but often enough to keep your readers interested.
  • Ping Your Blog - After you write a post, “ping” your website to let feed services and others know you’ve updated your website. Three ping services to try are Pingoat, Pingomatic and Technorati.
  • Consider Getting Your Own Domain Name - Instead of having a long name like yourname.livejournal.com or yourname.blogspot.com, why not consider getting your own domain name? They’re cheap - for instance, GoDaddy offers .com domain names for less than $10 per year. Get a name readers will remember. You’ve probably heard of blogs like Perez Hilton and Little Green Footballs - both catchy and easy to remember.

After you follow these tips, use a service like Google Analytics or HitTail to track the progress of visitors, searches and links to your blog.

CG, it should read Google “Submit Your Feed.” to show you what you should type in Google. I will change it to make it easier.

    TipDiva,

Great point about having your own domain name. However, two things are you can still use blogspot and wordpress.com blogs to create backlinks to your main blog. Why not, they are free!

Also, one huge point that people often miss is newer domain names can be sandboxed pretty quickly at times. GoDaddy offers used or expiring domain name auctions. You can pick up an older domain name for as low as $5 and some even have PR with them.

The domain name I am using for my “name” in this reply was on closeout sale at GoDaddy for $5 and was a PR3.

I have heard of people getting PR 5 and PR 6 domain names that way also.

Great points, and thanks for linking to me!

Great ideas, Elliott… I didn’t know that PR actually worked that way! I’m still waiting for TipDiva.com to get Google Ranked… I hear it takes a while.

Thank you for the “ping” tips. My hubbie has been telling my I need to do this, but I hadn’t really bothered to look into it yet, as I’ve been taking it slow. However, it was so easy to use Pingomatic just now, that I’ve got no excuse! I am off to try out technocrati now…
