xmaspresent.jpgYou’ve probably received a gift you had to return before. It could be the wrong size, the wrong style, broken or you may already have the same item. And we all know how returning gifts, especially after the holidays, can be a hassle. Here’s how to make the trip to the return counter a little easier:

  • Some Gifts Are Unreturnable - Yes, that includes the reindeer sweater your Aunt Edna knitted for you. You don’t necessarily have to love it - just wear it when she’s around. But seriously, some gifts are non-returnable, including ones that are unique, personalized or those bought in special sales or clearances. Make sure you know this before going to the store, otherwise you may find yourself not being able to return a gift.
  • Keep All Receipts - The best way to do this is to tape the receipt to the package so you don’t have to go crazy looking for it later. Just do it in an inconspicuous spot; tape can damage the packaging and some stores may not accepted an item with damaged packaging. Make sure to include gift receipts with gifts you give, as well.
  • Do Not Tamper With Packaging - If you know you are going to return a gift, avoid opening the packaging if you can. If you do, make sure you keep everything, from the box to the styrofoam. If you have clothing, keep all tags on and do not try them on while wearing perfume, deodorant, makeup or anything that might stain the item. Be aware that many stores do not accept returns on items that have been tampered with.
  • Understand A Store’s Return Policy - You can find a store’s return policy on the receipt, the store’s website or simply by calling. Make sure you know the policy before you go, otherwise you may find yourself not being able to return a gift. Policies certain stores may have include: a limit on the amount of items you can return a year; restocking fees; the type of credit you receive back; and a time limit on returning items. Returning gifts to online stores may also have special provisions.
  • Do Not Return A Gift At Peak Times - Stores are absolutely mobbed the week after Christmas. If you need to return something, check the store’s time limit on returning gifts. If you can, avoid the weekends and peak times like lunch time or after work. Try hitting the store right after it opens. If you can wait until January, do so.
  • Be Patient - Lines may be long and tempers may be short, but try to keep your cool. Especially be patient with the workers at the return counter. Sometimes return policies are beyond their control and may need the consent of a manager.

And if you can’t return a gift, here are a few ideas. But make sure doing any of these aren’t going to hurt the gift giver’s feelings:

  • Trade The Gift - Perhaps your sister loves your new scarf, but red isn’t your color. Trade her for the blue sweater you’ve been eyeing.
  • Sell The Gift Online - eBay, Amazon.com and Half.com are good starts.
  • Regift - If you’d like to regift (some statistics say two out of three people regift!), follow MP Dunleavy’s 12 rules for regifting.
  • Donate - There are plenty of people in need and charities that will accept the gift with open arms.
