Before you shell out a lot of money for essential software, such as word processers and anti-virus programs, do realize there are a lot of comparable free or bargain-priced programs that are just as good, or even better, than the expensive version. Here are some that won’t break your bank, and tips to find even more affordable software:
- Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware - I call these three programs the holy trinity: AVG Anti-Virus, Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. Since downloading them, I haven’t had a virus or malware affecting my computer. Run them regularly, keep them updated, practice safe browsing habits (this site is geared towards safeguarding kids, but is a good reminder for adults), and you’re good to go. I also recommend Trend Micro’s HouseCall free online virus scan.
- Word Processers And Office Suites - OpenOffice is an open source office suite with programs akin to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more. Also try the free Google Docs to create free documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
- PDF Converters - Instead of paying for the full version of Adobe, try the free Primo PDF Converter, which I find works just as well.
- Photo Editing Software - Forget expensive PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro. There are many free image editors out there that are perfect for the beginning retoucher and resizer, including Pixia and IrfanView.
- Use Download.com To Search For Free Or Cheap Software - CNET’s Download.com offers safe, spyware-free software for either free or a reasonable price. You can find office programs, media players, games and more.
- Check Your Local Library - Many libraries have computer software to loan, so you can try before you buy. You may like the more expensive version, but this prevents you from potential buyer’s remorse.
- Browse Garage Sales And Thrift Stores - These are good ways to find affordable software, especially those geared towards children. Make sure you check that all CDs/DVDs are included and scratch-free, and that any applicable manuals and registration codes are included.
- Try eBay, Half.com Or Amazon - A lot of sellers have brand-new software - many popular titles, as well - for below retail price. Just make sure that you are getting a genuine version, and preferably sealed. Check the seller’s ratings to make sure that he hasn’t sold pirated software in the past.
- Keep An Eye Out For Promotions - General Mills sometimes packages free CD games in its cereal boxes, and fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King have also given out free software with meals.
- Never Download From Warez Sites - Warez is computer lingo for software, and many people search such sites for free, pirated software. But you never know what you’re going to get - a lot of warez sites are filled with viruses, trojan horses, pop-ups and porn. That said, don’t download software from P2P (peer-to-peer) software like Kazaa or WinMX either. You’re just asking for trouble.
